In a time where the population of Auckland is more than the number of beds available, access to and keeping long-term, quality housing is incredibly important. Rent Smart is an education programme delivered by local community groups and supported by the Maungakiekie Tāmaki Local Board.
Tamaki Budgeting Services is currently running a series of workshops in Mt Wellington and the Onehunga Council of Community Services has a programme which starts mid-September in the Onehunga area.
“Rent Smart can be an really useful source of information for members of our communities, who may otherwise struggle” explains Suzi Kata from To Wahi who coordinate Rent Smart in Oranga.
“Attendees are mostly those seeking the skills and knowledge that will help provide stability in their housing arrangements and these courses help them do just that.”
Rent Smart supports current and potential renters through a series of learning sessions that cover topics ranging from; the rights and responsibilities of tenants, managing money and debts, how to keep a warm and healthy home, as well as workshops on how to better understand the social housing opportunities in New Zealand.
