Three emerging choreographers will showcase their work at a free public event at Auckland’s Art Gallery during Artweek, running from 12 to 20 October.
To be held on Tuesday 15 October, the Pacific Dance Choreographic Lab event is supported by Auckland Council and is being performed as part of the Late Night Art programme.
Each year, the Pacific Dance Choreographic Lab event showcases three New Zealand-based Pacific Island choreographers who are selected to create original dance works and develop them for the public showing. Along the way, artistic support and guidance are provided by senior dance mentors.
This year, Villa Junior Lemanu and Raisedinland Iose from Auckland and Connor Ooshon Masseurs from Wellington have been selected to participate.
The council’s Auckland Design Office Activation Manager Barbara Holloway says the Late Night Art event gives people the opportunity to view creative displays of choreography in the gallery’s unique atrium setting.
“It’s exciting to be supporting the work of emerging artists and get to see their creative thought-provoking work close-up.”
Barbara says the gallery’s opening hours will be extended from 5pm to 9pm as part of Art Week’s Late Night Art event.
Villa Junior Lemanu is a recent dance graduate from the University of Auckland with an impressive performance resume, extending from dance to screen acting.
Raisedinland Iose graduated from Unitec and received his first professional dance contract in the world premier of Michael Parmenter’s Orpheus – as part of the Movement Chorus.
Connor Ooshon Masseurs is Pasifika artist Decipher’er of circles, movement technician and workshop facilitator and is already performing around the world.
Artweek is an annual, week-long festival celebrating the visual arts of Auckland.
