Two Papakura Local Board grants to develop a memorial wall and path in Central Park, which would mark 100 years since the end of World War One, will instead be used on a shared path and cycleway at Pulman Park.
Rotary and Lions were both awarded $15,000 for different aspects of the memorial project, but the wall won’t now be built because it is too expensive.
Because the money is not being used for what it was intended, it would have been returned had the board not agreed to the clubs using it for a new project.
Rotary and Lions asked if they could use the funding to contribute to the shared path, with seating and fitness equipment, in partnership with the Pulman Trust.
Rotary asked for all $15,000, but Lions will contribute $5000 towards seating at Karaka Lakes and the remaining $10,000 to the pathway.
The board has asked Community Facilities to work with Lions to ensure the quality of the assets delivered meet Auckland Council standards.
Rotary members appeared during the board’s public forum, saying the club would still like to include a memorial aspect to the path, and envisaged working with the trust for some time to create a significant community access that might also include exercise equipment, picnic and barbecue areas, and seating.
