Auckland Council’s pedestrian priority vision for the city centre is being well supported in feedback on the City Centre Masterplan (CCMP) refresh.
Public consultation on Auckland Council’s CCMP refresh is now in its last week with hundreds of people sharing their opinions on proposed new content.
Consultation opened on Monday 9 September and closes on Friday 18 October.
Early public feedback shows overwhelming support for Access for Everyone (A4E) concept – with more feedback being encouraged by Heart of the City.
Heart of the City Chief Executive Viv Beck says the “Access for Everyone concept proposes a new way of looking at access into and around the city centre”.
Access for Everyone is a new idea to create more space in the city centre, responding to the needs of Auckland’s inner-city neighbourhoods.
The concept is based on reallocating street space in favour of people, operations and street functions and reorganising access to prioritise trips needed to support the city centre, such as deliveries, construction and emergency services.
Viv says as well as focusing on creating a great place for people, the A4E concept prioritises the need for essential access and servicing.
“As the city grows and space gets more contested, we need to think about how the city centre can function and operate differently. Consultation on the A4E concept is a good way to have this discussion, so we encourage people to find out more about the idea and provide feedback.”
A4E is a high-level concept and will require further development and testing prior to full implementation. It is just one of the proposals out for public consultations in the CCMP refresh, which also integrates the Waterfront Plan into the CCMP.
“The City Centre Masterplan is a fundamental document to guide investment and development in the city centre,” Viv says.
“We are pleased that the CCMP and waterfront plans have come together in one document with this refresh as they are inextricably linked.
“The waterfront is a major asset that Aucklanders love and we’re hoping that people take the opportunity to give their views about its future.”
