The community is right behind getting a bit fruity at Huapai’s Sunny Crescent playground.
Rodney Local Board has approved a fruit bowl design for the site, which also features a bee springer, forest bug seesaw, fruit trees for shade, and flower beds.
Of the 52 community submissions received, most favoured the design and relocating from Merlot Heights to the larger site which allows for more play equipment and easy access to a new residential neighbourhood.
The playground caters for toddlers to 12-year-olds and is likely to include a wacky-spinner, slide, two-seater swing, mini-tramp, ropes and handholds for climbing, concrete paths ideal for scooters and learner riders and edging for stepping and balancing, all surrounded by seating shaded by fruit trees.
Calls for a flying fox, splash pad, fitness equipment, bike and pump track and toilets can’t be met because of the park’s size and location and budget constraints.
Because Kumeū-Huapai is growing but doesn’t have a comprehensive playground network, it’s possible some of those will be accommodated in a destination playground in the future.
Building is expected to start next year with the timeline dependent on the resource consent and tender processes. Details of the design and feedback can be found on the council website (item 18).
