Chair and member positions on the Auckland District Licensing Committee (DLC) are now open with Auckland Council encouraging applications from community-minded people who meet the requirements of the position description for the next term.
Auckland Council is looking for people who have an understanding of alcohol-related harm and how it affects Auckland’s communities.
The DLC is responsible for determining all alcohol licences and managers’ certificates in Auckland including new and renewal applications. Chair and member positions will serve on the DLC from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2023.
A comprehensive understanding of judicial processes, a working knowledge of hearings and how New Zealand legislation works (including relevant case law and decisions made by other DLCs) is desirable.
The role of the DLC chairs and members is to provide a quality service to the council and its customers and exercise the DLC’s powers and functions under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.
There are no formal qualifications required to be a DLC chair or member, however, you must have good standing in the community, the highest standard of professional and personal integrity and the necessary knowledge, skill and experience relating to matters that are likely to come before the committee.
While some chairs and members have legal experience, it is not a requirement.
Above all, the council is looking for people who can demonstrate impartiality and integrity and commit to the principles of natural justice and a sense of fair play.
With the council’s obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, an understanding of Te Ao Māori is advantageous.
A commitment to diversity and an ability to work effectively with all of Auckland’s ethnic and cultural communities will be required.
The DLC role is part-time and candidates need to be available for flexible working hours.
Work will be on an ‘as required’ basis at the remuneration rate set by the Minister of Justice.

A selection panel will interview shortlisted applicants during February 2020 with successful applicants commencing the role on 1 July 2020.
