Auckland Council’s Finance and Performance Committee has approved the sale of 6 Clonbern Road, Remuera to enable a future mixed-use development.
The property is currently a car park serving visitors and shoppers in Remuera village.
Committee Chair Councillor Desley Simpson says the sale will allow for prospective purchasers to create a mixed-use development in the village and provide more car parking.
“The sale presents a very exciting opportunity in the village, as any development must include a minimum of 200 car parks to serve the local community and visitors to Remuera,” she says.
“Despite our best efforts, and after investigating a variety of possible engineering solutions, it became apparent that the current upper level of the car park could not be retained or just left.
"This opportunity and future development will ensure more parking than the site currently offers, and to that end, is a real win for the Remuera community.”
Panuku Development Auckland will manage the sale on behalf of Auckland Council.
While the property is prepared for sale, Panuku will be demolishing the upper deck of the car park to ensure the site is safe.
The demolition will begin in early January, to minimise disruption to businesses, and is expected to take approximately eight weeks.
“We appreciate that the demolition will be an inconvenience for a short amount of time. We have worked hard to secure works to begin early January to minimise this,” says Cllr Simpson.
“We are working very closely with Auckland Transport and neighbouring property owners to manage parking around the site and find alternative parking options while this work is underway.
“Once the demolition is completed, the site will be reinstated as a single level car park for the community to use with more parking than is currently on the lower level until future development by a new owner begins.”
