Residents near Cross Street Reserve have a new playground.
Papakura Local Board officially opened the new playground on Sunday, the third recent opening after upgrades were also completed at Berwyn Avenue and Clarice Place.
Board chair Brent Catchpole says the reserve was without equipment for too long after a spate of vandalism left residents with little more than open space to play in.
“It’s great to be here today and see so many families enjoying what’s been built, and using the space, bringing the life back to a valuable community area.”
Community Facilities organised the project after consulting with residents to see what they most wanted developed for the area.
Now a climbing wall and trampoline sit alongside swings and other playground equipment, and a basketball half-court.
“The board recognises how important it is to be able to get out and play locally, so we have invested heavily in improving small local parks so today’s kids can play close to home,” Mr Catchpole says.
Board member Felicity Auva’a says local parks keep children safe and occupied in their own neighbourhoods.
“It’s great to see so many families have just walked to the park today to celebrate the opening, and it’s even better to see the smiles on young faces.”
Contractors Ventia were even on hand to staff the barbecue, while a mobile library encouraged youngsters to use library services.
