The first phase of work to beautify Hunters Corner in Papatoetoe is now complete.
Auckland Transport (AT) has worked with the Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board to deliver the streetscape upgrade, after years of wear and tear to the busy town centre.
Funded by AT’s Local Board Transport Capital Fund (LBTCF), the upgrade includes replacement of bins and seating along the length of Hunters Corner Town Centre, replacement of existing kerb, channel and footpath from Hoteo Ave to Tui Road on the Northern side, and removal of tree pits and fencing.
The LBTCF is a capital budget provided to all local boards by Auckland Council and delivered by AT.
Local boards can use this fund to deliver transport infrastructure projects that they believe are important but are not part of AT’s work programme.
In August 2017, the local board requested that AT investigate streetscape upgrades for Hunters Corner - to progress the allocation of the LBTCF.
In this electoral term, the Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board has $3,380,259 available in its LBTCF budget to allocate.
The board has spent approximately $1 million dollars on phase 1.
Chairwoman of the Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board Lotu Fuli says the board is pleased at how quickly the work was completed, after construction kicked off at the end of October.
“We’re overjoyed that it’s been done, and been done so quickly after work started. It has been a long time in the planning – a good five or six years that we’ve been trying to get it underway.”
“The next phase – phase two – will be to do up the other side of Hunters Corner. We’re excited that we’ve been able to bring it forward by almost a year and, in doing so, save the rate-payer a few hundred thousand dollars.”
Lotu Fuli says the other side is set to be completed by the end of summer 2020.
“It’s great when we can beautify the area. We are looking forward to some new seating coming in as well. That will provide a good rest stop for people as they are shopping and will be a bit more inviting than just a pathway.”
“It’s been done much quicker than we expected and we really excited to be able to support our residents and businesses.”
