A Papakura learn to swim programme has funding for pool hire costs.

Grants of $2000 were the order of the day in the first round of the Papakura Local Board’s small grants funding.

Five organisations were granted $2000, the largest amount, while individual Louise Goodson received the smallest grant, $250, money she spends providing knitting for the town’s newest citizens, newborns at the Papakura Birthing Unit.

Six of the grants were made to help sporting groups, including $1895 to outfit Rosehill College’s First XI cricket team.

Board chair Brent Catchpole says deciding grants should be one of the more enjoyable board tasks, but there are always requests that far exceed what the board can fund.

“It’s wonderful to be able to support individuals and groups that do such great work, but it’s tempered by frequently only being able to part-fund requests, and by having to turn others away.
