Hundreds of children will get a taste of competitive triathlon on February 21 when they descend on Clarks Beach for the Fulton Primary Schools Triathlon.

The event is funded through Franklin Local Board’s event partnership fund and board chair Andy Baker says the annual event has been running for more than 20 years and has become a must-do for the area’s young people.

Run by the Fulton Swim School and volunteers, the emphasis is on taking part, challenging yourself, trying something new and being active.

Younger contestants aged from eight to 10 must swim 100 metres in the sea, cycle four kilometres and run five, while 11 and 12-year-olds double those distances.

“It’s a very well-run event that caters for ‘have a go’ children and competitive athletes and the precision time-keeping and professional approach mean the kids get a taste of this tough sport.”

Course

The event starts at 9.45am when the first swimmers enter the water, with racers staggered from there, ahead of a prizegiving at 11.45am.

There is a public viewing area at the Torkar Reserve beach, and the competitors run and cycle a Torkar Rd-Stevenson Rd-Stella Drive circuit.
