Waiheke Local Board has given funding to community arts group Kāhui Creative Waiheke to establish a community-led arts coordinator role on the island.
Chair of Waiheke Local Board, Cath Handley, says the role will support the island’s arts community and celebrate Waiheke as an arts destination.
“The new role will help to grow community awareness of our local arts, increase participation and foster collaboration amongst our artists.”
Similar arts coordinator roles have proved successful in other local board areas she said.
The new role was one of the recommended actions in Waiheke Arts and Culture Needs Assessment, a report commissioned by the local board in 2018 to establish community needs for arts on the island.
The local board has allocated funding over two years to Kāhui Creative Waiheke which intends to seek alternative funding after 2020/2021 to ensure the sustainability of the role.
