It’s now a case of 'birds of a feather flock' together for Gavin the rooster who has found his forever home in Drury after being adopted from the Auckland Council Manukau Animal Shelter.
Gavin, along with his pig buddy Gustavo, was rehomed last week after shelter staff took to social media to share their unique friendship.
“They would spend the day together and at night Gustavo would curl up in his kennel with Gavin on guard in front of it,” Senior Shelter Officer Briar Fearns says.
“They were inseparable, that’s why we really wanted them to be adopted together.”
Lifestyle block owner Amit Kumar and his family saw the story and offered up their land – and love.
However, since moving to greener pastures there’s been a bit of a rift in the pair’s relationship, with Gavin now preferring to spend his time chasing chicks.
“The rooster hangs out in the trees with the chickens… I think he now realises he’s like them and not a pig,” Amit says.
An eight-month-old saddleback boar, Gustavo was found in Otara and had been at the shelter since January. Gavin had been there since October last year.
Amit says he’s surprised at how friendly Gustavo is.
“He’s one very friendly pig.”
Amit says the pair are loving their new surroundings – which includes sharing the lifestyle block with a few chickens, sheep, goats and a cat.
