Two upgrades in the Henderson area will improve safety for cyclists on a key route and make a currently unused community space habitable following a decision by Henderson-Massey Local Board.
The Plumer Domain, Henderson Valley Green, Serwayne Walk and Corban Estate bridges on the Opanuku Stream path in Henderson will have anti-slip resurfacing installed ahead of winter at a cost of $85,000, providing a timely boost for cyclists.
While the council-owned facility at Level 1, 20 Alderman Drive is to have its heating, ventilation and air conditioning system renewed for $60,000, so that the offices are suitable to lease to a community organisation.
Positive impact
Henderson-Massey Local Board chair, Chris Carter, says that the decision to approve the works will have a positive impact on the community.
“We know that the Opanuku Stream cycleway is a popular stretch of pathway, and inspection of the bridges showed that if the surfacing was not improved it would likely make them too hazardous to use in the winter months, so getting this job done was an absolute priority.
“While at the same time we had an under-used office space near the heart of Henderson. This space is perfect for a community organisation to use but it had to be brought up to scratch before being leased out, so again this was an easy decision that will have a real tangible benefit for the community.”
Budget
In order to pay for the unscheduled work, budget was moved from the Birdwood Homestead upgrade in Te Rangi Hiora/Birdwood Winery, with that project set to get underway in the next financial year.
