Ōrākei Local Board is working extra hard to ensure that every segment of the community is engaged with during an ongoing consultation.
“Ōrākei is often pigeonholed as an ‘elderly community’ and that’s just not the case," says Scott Milne, Chair of Ōrākei Local Board.
"Yes, we have a larger portion of over-65s than many parts of the city, but we also have significant numbers of young families, children and youth living in the area. There is also substantial ethnic diversity, considerably changed from a generation ago and which greatly enriches our community.”
Currently, all 21 local boards across Auckland are engaging with their communities to gather input which will guide the drafting of local board plans and the setting of priorities for the next three years. In the Ōrākei area, the local board is working extra hard to ensure that every segment of the community is engaged with and encouraged to provide input.
“We are holding over 10 community meetings and three library drop-in sessions to spread the word and encourage input. We are talking to schools and visiting two schools personally. We are putting up stalls at public events, holding two hui with local iwi, meeting at marae, churches, community halls to name just a few of the activities that have been keeping us busy these recent months. Our local Chinese community is also engaging with us online, and we will look forward to hearing their input soon.”
