Howick residents taking part in the Pest Free Musick Point project will find it easy to know where to collect their free rat traps.
A colourful trailer, decorated by three local students attending three different Enviro schools, will stand out in the local community.
Local students, Anne Zhang (St. Kentigern College), Belinda Zhong (Buckland’s Beach Intermediate) and Sophia Wei (Farm Cove Intermediate) have spent 72 hours and 42 minutes creating four murals for Howick Local Board’s new pest free trailer.
It was the first time the girls had worked collaboratively on an art project and found it both fun and inspiring to combine their different ideas and skills.
“We want people to support Pest Free Howick as part of Pest Free Auckland 2050,” says Anne.
“We want to spread the word, tell people how important it is to protect our endemic birds, reptiles, plants and insects. Having endemic birds and trees is good for people too.”
The children’s parents supported the artists who hope one in five households in the community will become involved in helping Howick attract birds from the Hauraki Gulf back into their gardens and parks.
“Auckland is unique. Located on an almost island-like peninsula in close proximity to predator-free Hauraki Gulf Treasure Islands, our vision is to make our backyards a habitat for the native birds that are thriving on Rangitoto, Motutapu and Motuihe, adds Anne.
