Auckland Council’s Planning Committee today approved a proposed list of projects to be considered for application to the second round of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Innovating Streets for People pilot fund.
This fund aims to use quick, low cost improvements to create more people friendly spaces in our neighbourhoods.
Auckland Transport (AT), Auckland Council, Panuku Development Auckland, Kāinga Ora, and Local Boards, submitted proposed projects for consideration as part of a funding application for round two of the pilot.
The proposed list of projects approved today will be developed further into full project proposals to ensure they meet Waka Kotahi’s funding criteria. Final decisions on the projects to be submitted in round two will be made prior to the application deadline of 3 July.
This follows the Auckland Transport application made last month of 15 short-listed projects for round one.
If successful, 90 per cent of the funding for each project will come from the government’s Innovating Streets fund and the remaining 10 per cent will come from the respective organisations.
The Innovating Streets fund allows for quick, low cost initiatives to be trialled in the pilot as a transition for long term projects.
Waka Kotahi NZ will select the best applications based on a range of criteria such as innovation, collaboration, and community engagement. Projects can range from safe street improvements outside schools, slow street interventions, and walking and cycling facilities and include initiatives such as pop-up spaces and community-led street events.
Waka Kotahi is expected to announce successful applications for round one in the coming weeks and for round two by the end of July.
If successful, projects will be developed together with Local boards, communities and other stakeholders, such as business associations.
Successful projects for both rounds will be delivered by June 2021.
