South Aucklanders are being urged to have their say on Auckland Council’s Emergency Budget before public consultation closes this week on Friday 19 June.
With only five days left to give feedback, Manukau ward Councillors Alf Filipaina and Efeso Collins are asking their residents to speak up on a budget which could have significant impacts on their local community.
“The COVID-19 crisis has hit hard with a $525 million hole expected in the council’s income and we must take measures to manage our finances responsibly,” says Councillor Alf Filipaina.
“The council’s proposed emergency budget cuts spending across the board, defers some big construction projects and reduces the levels of council services in local communities.
“The simple fact is there is less money to spend in our local communities and hard choices ahead about how to balance the books while working to keep the services our people value the most.
“That’s why we need to hear from as many residents as possible on what they think about this budget because the decisions made will impact people’s day-to-day activities. To what extent depends on the feedback our community provides,” he says.
Manukau Councillor Efeso Collins says there are no easy choices and people should consider carefully about whether they support the previously agreed 3.5 per cent average general rates increase, or a lower increase of 2.5 per cent.
“On average, a 3.5 per cent increase would work out to an extra $1.82 per week on your rates bill, or $1.35 per week under a 2.5 per cent increase. Both options have differing impacts on the cuts in spending and reductions in services within our local communities,” says Councillor Collins.
“The council is involved in the sports people play, the parks and hobbies they enjoy, their learning, and cultural activities and the events they attend - from the Māngere Arts and Ōtara Music Arts centres, to our eight libraries, five pools and leisure centres, and 275 local parks across Manukau.
“With council-funded facilities and services such a part of people’s everyday lives in our communities, it is why we must make our voices heard on this budget.
“It matters for you, our community and the future of our city. Give your feedback today and help us to represent Manukau,” says Councillor Collins.
