Resiliency top priority for Aotea / Great Barrier Island

Collaboration in conservation, maintaining Aotea’s uniqueness and support for mana whenua are amongst feedback put forward during the first phase of public input sought to help shape Aotea / Great Barrier Local Board’s draft Local Board Plan 2020-2023.

This feedback, and more, has been included in the local board’s draft plan which proposes measures aimed to ensure the island is resilient with thriving communities, a healthy natural environment and fit for purpose infrastructure.

Aotea / Great Barrier Local Board chair Izzy Fordham says the draft plan sets an agenda that puts the resiliency of Aotea at the heart of all the board does.

“During the COVID-19 lockdown, our island’s strengths were highlighted: our ability to respond quickly and collaborate; the resilience of our core agencies and our strong mainland connections.

“But our weaknesses were also exposed: our freight vulnerabilities, lack of connectivity, exposed marine border and heavy reliance on the tourism economy.

“We’ve drafted our local board plan specifically to meet the challenges of the coming years, post-pandemic. We’ve stripped the draft plan right back to one focused outcome of island resilience.

“Now we need to hear from the residents of Aotea to make sure we’ve got it right. So please make sure you have your say.”
