What will the Whau look like in a post-COVID world? That’s the question on the mind of the Whau Local Board, which has released its draft three-year plan for consultation.
The Plan sets the direction and tone for the next three years and contains six outcomes that will impact everything from funding decisions through to the boards focus areas.
Quality of life
Board Chair Kay Thomas says that ensuring the community is well catered with facilities and improved urban centres is something that will have a significant impact on quality of life in the Whau.
“Despite the challenges that the council faces to recover from the impact of Covid-19, the board is committed to working towards making the Whau a better place to live. We know that the area is set to grow in population in the coming years, and we are blessed with wonderful cultural diversity too.
The Plan
“Our plan is about delivering for that community in our outcome areas, empowering our communities and nurturing our diversity and creativity, ensuring quality urban development and community facilities to meet the needs of a growing and changing population.
“It’s also about acting on Māori aspirations and culture, improving walking, cycling and public transport, protecting and enhancing our natural environment as well as strong local economy, and town centres and neighbourhoods that are supportive and connected.
“We know that this is a difficult time for many people because of the economic impact of Covid-19. We want to reassure our community that we are working hard on their behalf to do all we can in improving the area, not just on infrastructure, but also supporting our communities to feel better connected.
“There are many things that we can do to reach that point and we are excited to share our plans with the community for feedback.
