A new playground at Huntington Reserve is underway and on track for completion and opening to the community this month.
The new playground features equipment targeting children aged 3-10 years of age – assisting with improving strength, balance and agility with swinging, spinning, sliding and jumping.
Specific features include a swing set, spinner bowl, slide, climbing net and picnic set, along with log scramble and stepping posts for informal play. New access paths, seating and landscape planting are also included in the design.
Construction of the new playground came about when Auckland Council’s Community Facilities Team identified a gap in play provision in the area in 2018 and then identified Huntington Reserve as a suitable location to receive a new play asset.
Consultation with the surrounding community was undertaken in May 2019, with feedback integrated into the final detailed design. Changes to the original design included making the slide face south, a reduction in paths and including more climbing elements.
Upper Harbour Local Board Chair, Margaret Miles, says the board is pleased to be able to increase play opportunities in Greenhithe.
“We don’t have a lot of money to splash around for new assets, so we’re pretty pleased to be able to do this in Greenhithe and have something that meets the needs of our residents there.”
