The rural environment will get a boost from three grants under Franklin Local Board’s Waterway Protection Fund.
But board member Alan Cole says more people should be applying to make use of a fund he says is not well-known enough.
“With $30,000 available this year under the fund, it is probably the only grant round we have that can come in undersubscribed.
“While we were still asked for more than the $30,000, one request was declined because there were more suitable funding sources available.
“We know there are people out there doing good things on their properties to protect waterways, and we want them to be aware there is help available.”
All three grants were made towards the cost of native plants for restoration work along waterways and riparian margins.
Franklin Local Board places a strong emphasis on the environment, listing kaitiakitanga and protection of the environment as one of its priorities.
Chair Andy Baker says the board tries to support the community adopting good behaviours, invests in restorative initiatives across the area and focuses on sustainability.
“Many of our rural community members are doing terrific work on their properties to safeguard waterways and bush areas and the wildlife it sustains.
“We will try to make more people aware of the funding, because we are seeing forested reserves, rivers and streams regenerating thanks to volunteer groups and property owners, and we want to do everything we can to support that.”
