Hard decisions required for Auckland’s Parks
Councillor Christine Fletcher

With recent population growth, Aucklanders are experiencing ever-increasing demands on our existing parks network.

Aucklanders know the benefits and importance of open space on our health and well-being. So, new developments, be they greenfield or brownfield (infill), must incorporate open space as we respond to the needs of our growing city.

Parks and cemeteries are essential infrastructure for Auckland. The renewal of existing assets has not had sufficient attention in the past and there is now overwhelming pressure to keep up with new development.

The 10-year Budget, currently being consulted on, tries to juggle new expenditure with long-overdue renewals. It is trying to balance contractually-committed projects, alongside the delivery of priority renewals to mitigate asset risk at the same time as prioritising new development – all in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and decreasing revenue.

The views of Aucklanders are critical. The council needs to know what your priorities are and where you would like us to find savings while maintaining the essential services you rely on.

The Mayor’s proposal commits to an average 3.5 per cent annual general rates increase over the decade with a one-off 5 per cent rise in the next financial year.
