Waitemata Local Board urges people to speak up about homelessness

Waitematā Local Board Chair Richard Northey is urging people to speak up about homelessness in Auckland Council’s 10-year Budget consultation, closing 22 March 2021.

Auckland Council’s ‘Recovery Budget’ will determine council spending in Auckland for the next 10-years and aims to help the city recover from the on-going impacts of the COVID-19 crisis.

Chair Northey says one of the board’s priorities is to give more support to homeless people and communities around Karangahape Road and across Waitematā.

“We’ve supported a number of initiatives over the years to assist our homeless communities, including mobile showers and providing other basic amenities like drinking fountains, toilets and lockers.

“We want to continue this work and to see priority given to it over the next 10-years. We believe all people in Waitematā should have a place to call home, access to opportunities and facilities, and to have a sense of belonging.

“We’re also advocating for, and proposing support for a number of other initiatives that will impact Waitematā positively. We need your feedback on all of these.

“Increased funding for water quality improvements, the restoration and reopening of Leys Institute, the creation of a park in Ponsonby, responding to the impacts of climate change - this budget will touch on so many areas that affect our communities. We need you to have a say.”

Councillor for Waitematā and Gulf Councillor Pippa Coom says there are a range of critical issues in the city centre and across wider Auckland guiding the decision making in the Recovery Budget.

“Now is your chance to let us know the priorities for where and how you think money should be spent over the next 10-years.”
