Public facilities in the Devonport-Takapuna Local area are becoming more accessible for people with disabilities.
Work on a new toilet and changing facility at Gould Reserve at Takapuna Beach is scheduled to get underway this winter, with one of the special features being a Changing Places Room space.
“This wonderful new world-class amenity will include toilets, showers and changing facilities as well as special chair hoist in the Changing Places Room space so people with severe disability and mobility challenges can wash and change more easily,” says Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Aidan Bennett.
The additional features have been enabled through the support of generous locals Jackie and Chris Reeve, who were the key funders and driving forces behind the fabulous destination playground nearby.
“We are really pleased that we are able to provide facilities that mean anyone can enjoy a day at the beach and really grateful for the support of Jackie and Chris to enable this to happen,” adds Mr Bennett.
“These works, in addition to the beach access mat that was placed on Takapuna Beach earlier this year to enable wheelchair access, ensures there is no barrier to people with disabilities getting out and having a great time.”
The new changing and toilet block will replace the existing facilities because the existing facility is at the end of its life and is no longer fit for purpose.
The Reeves have also approached the council to support the installation of new play equipment in the area where the current toilet block is located, with a focus on equipment for children with disabilities.
A report on the play equipment is due to go to the board’s 21 April meeting. The local board approved the concept for the toilet and changing block in December 2020.
Focus on parks, facilities, and open spaces
One of the focus areas of the 2020 Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Plan is to have parks, facilities and opens spaces that are well maintained, and meet the recreation and social needs of the area’s growing population.
“We have fantastic playgrounds with potential to improve some of the most popular sites, enabling children of all ages and abilities to use them. We will support projects to improve accessibility for older residents and those with mobility challenges,” says Mr Bennett.
