Upper Harbour Local Board is asking Scott Point residents to help finalise the design of a new park.
Locals call the yet-to-be-named park Observation Green after a street bordering it. The flat site of over 4000 m2 is surrounded by new homes and several roads.
Board Chair Lisa Whyte says while residents formally submitted about developing the park during last year’s local board and annual plan consultations, there have been many informal requests over the years as the suburb has grown.
“Community is at the heart of the design with different spaces to play, exercise and picnic.
“It’s important to retain flexibility within this fantastic space so we can cater for the different and changing needs and preferences of the community.
"We are also keen to provide native trees for shade and privacy for adjacent neighbours,” Whyte says.
Scott Point Sustainable Sports Park is nearby, and it’s very exciting that Stage 1 of its development starts later this year.
“This first stage will deliver the long-awaited sports fields and the shared paths that will improve connectivity within and around the community.
“While it’s a multi-year project; there are plans for recreation areas including a nature playscape, a recreation green, and barbecue areas that will be provided in later stages as funding allows.”
The new park at Observation Green is ideally located for activities that complement the sports park such as an agility trail and learn to ride bike track.
The design concept features:
- a communal area with picnic tables, a drinking fountain and a shade structure located in the north-western corner of the park
- low to medium height mounds covered with low growing plants to provide shelter from occasional strong winds
- a diagonal concrete path running through the park and communal area that links to the path network
- a small playspace to complement a future playspace at Scott Point Sustainable Sports Park
- an agility fitness trail suitable for all ages
- a learn-to-ride path
- benches, timber logs and steppers.
Whyte says that the feedback from residents’ group sessions held last year helped inform the initial design.
“We are keen to hear people’s views on the features they would like included in the final design plan.”
Public feedback is open from 12 - 30 July 2021.
