Papakura Local Board has approved its work programmes for the financial year.
In feedback to the governing body around Local Parks and Sports Field Development budget, it recommended deferring Okawa Avenue Reserve because works proposed around Mill Road could impact the area.
Board chair Brent Catchpole says a delay might be practical until the impact of proposed work was better understood.
“We have suggested the budget go to Kirikiri Reserve, where there is a strategic case in place, because it is also an undeveloped area, and that would achieve the same aim of giving facilities to areas without them.
“We’ve also suggested that funding to Hingaia be topped up to offset the costs of compliance around consenting.”
And under its Infrastructure and Environmental Services programme the board has allocated more than $90,000 to five significant areas for Papakura.
Te Koiwi Pond enhancement work has been allocated than $32,700, the area’s waste minimisation programme $10,000, Papakura Stream landowner engagement $20,500, Wai Care Papakura $20,000, and the Manukau Harbour Forum more than $7400.
“Residents were very clear during engagement on the $10-Year Budget that the environment remain a priority for the board,” Catchpole says.
“We are seeing good things happening along the Papakura Stream in partnership with the Manurewa and Franklin boards, and we do not want to lose momentum on a project that has to be part of guaranteeing a future for the Manukau Harbour.
“And Te Koiwi has a special place in the plans Papakura Marae has, and seeing it returned to a better state will be welcomed by many park users not only from the marae, but the wider community.”
