Latest update: 22 September 2021
With Auckland’s move to Alert Level 3, Auckland Council contractors will start work to complete the Western Springs Lakeside Te Waiōrea track renewals from 9am on Thursday 23 September. We know how well used and loved the track has been during Alert level 4 and have therefore arranged for the track to only be closed while works are underway during weekdays.
During works, the track will be closed between 9am and 4pm on weekdays but open for public use before 9am and after 4pm on weekdays, and at all hours on weekends. Please observe the signs and please remember to social distance while using the track. The work is expected to take 10 working days (weather permitting).
Original article:
There have been several enquiries about the track through Western Springs Forest remaining closed.
While it’s still technically a construction site, some provisions have been made to re-open the track safely so that people can use the track for their daily walks during Alert Level 4 lockdown.
We are very mindful that our open spaces and tracks provide the community with much-needed connection to nature that helps with well-being.
The track itself is now compact and safe to walk on, but some bright safety fencing and signage around the ditches and culverts will be added to signal the areas where you’ll need to take care.
This work is being done today (3 September) and the track will be open in time for the weekend.
The track remains narrow in spots, so it’s essential that you practice 2-metre physical distancing, wear a face covering, are respectful of each other’s space and remain safe around the areas that are fenced off.
Once we come out of lockdown to Alert Level 3, our contractors will go back in, which may also require a short closure to complete works.
