Critical electrical work required to keep the West Wave Aquatic centre operational will mean that part of the West wave complex will be closed for five days from 13-17 December.

The partial closure will mean the pools, upper fitness centre and group fitness room and reception/café area will be closed while work on the electrical mains switchboard is completed.

However, the lower fitness centre, recreation centre, physiotherapy rooms, functional fitness studio, meeting rooms and the Plunket Centre will all remain open.

Frustrating

Leith Hurst, West Wave’s Centre Manager, says that it is frustrating to have the aquatic side closed so soon after reopening, but there was no other way to complete this upgrade work.

“Unfortunately, we have to do this work now to prevent needing to close the facility in the New Year when full services will have resumed.

“We had originally planned to close the aquatic facilities at West Wave for two days and nights in September 2021 to undertake work on the main switchboard and the electrical infrastructure that supplies it.
“However, as the result of the COVID-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown, and the restrictions that have been imposed since, the work has been delayed.”

Best alternative

Leith says that the best alternative to the original plan was to do this work while the facilities were at a reduced capacity, but that wasn’t the only reason why the work was happening now.

“It’s also dependant on the availability of specialist contractors to undertake the work, and the 13-17 December dates were the only ones we could make work.

“On the positive side, we will have the rest of the centre open during the works, so you will still be able to do a workout, attend a physio or Plunket appointment, or use the recreation centre.

“When people return to West Wave after the electrical work is completed, they will see that there is a lot of other work that has been done to help improve people’s experience.

“The new sauna and steam room facilities are looking great and the maintenance on the hydro-slide is complete too. We are looking forward to seeing familiar faces back in the facility over summer.”
