Applications open today for sport and recreation initiatives 1

Applications are now open for Auckland Council’s Regional Sport and Recreation Programme Grant. Any sporting or recreation organisation that is interested and eligible has until Friday, 4 March 2022 to apply.

The purpose of the annual regional programme is to see more Aucklanders becoming more active on a regular basis.

“Tāmaki Makaurau is a great place to get out and be active and we want to see sport and recreation be a natural part of the lives of all Aucklanders,” says Councillor Alf Filipaina, Chair of Auckland Council’s Parks, Arts, Community and Events Committee.

“Being active has such a good effect on our quality of life, health and wellbeing, all things that are important to dealing with the ongoing challenges around the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Applications are invited from Auckland-wide organisations that are:

  • a recreation and sport 'umbrella organisation' with a region-wide mandate
  • a regional federation, or grouping of local or sub-regional sports code organisations
  • a sport and recreation provider or advocacy group
  • an iwi or Māori organisation active in the sport and recreation sector.

Grants that will be awarded will be a mixture of ‘one-off’ and multi-year project grants for standalone initiatives and multi-year strategic relationship funding.

The grants seek to support programmes that enable tamariki (children) and rangatahi (young people) to develop skills for lifelong participation in sport and recreation, as well as programmes that support easy and affordable access for communities with low participation rates.

Councillor Filipaina encourages any eligible groups who are interested to apply now.

“If your sporting or recreation body has a great idea about getting Aucklanders, particularly our tamariki, more active please apply. Our world is changing so quickly and we all want to see our tamariki and rangatahi grow up to be strong and resilient in the face of multiple challenges. Being healthy and active helps with that strength and resilience, so any ideas you have to encourage tamariki and rangatahi to be more active more often are welcome.”
