Waitematā Local Board member Adriana Avendano Christie has resigned her position on the board.

In announcing her decision at the board’s business meeting on 15 March, chair Richard Northey acknowledged Adriana’s hard work, knowledge, and commitment to her role as a board member during her almost two terms.

“At the time she resigned, Adriana lead two important portfolios for the board, Economic Development and Parks, Sport and Recreation.

“As parks lead, Adriana had governance responsibility for the development and implementation of the Western Springs Park Plan, including the challenging and often controversial redevelopment of the Western Springs Forest, as well as the children’s playground in the park. She initiated major improvements to other parks including the Meola Reef, Outhwaite and Heard Parks,” Mr Northey says.

Throughout her time he says she demonstrated her knowledge of parks development issues and was very accessible to, and empathetic with, members of the community who had strong views about what should happen in their local park.

“We wish her well the next chapter of her career.”

Elected to the board in 2016, Adriana was also deputy chair of the council’s Auckland Domain Committee.

Next steps

A decision on whether to appoint a new member to fill the vacancy will be made at the board’s business meeting in April. Options include making an appointment or to leave vacant given the 2022 triennial local body elections take place later this year.
