Developing a new park at Observation Green, Scott Point took a step forward with Upper Harbour Local Board approving the final design late last year.
Chair Lisa Whyte says 102 responses were received from residents and the final park design incorporates most of this feedback.
“We had a great turn out at the open day last year and it was wonderful seeing our community enjoying what will be a fantastic neighbourhood park.
“Public feedback helped us to modify the park’s design and layout within our budget, to include a tabletop chessboard, wobbly goals and natural themed play equipment.
“We very much appreciate those who took the time to engage in the process – the outcome will be better for your involvement, thank you.”
The new park at Observation Green will be built using natural materials such as timber and rock, and will consist of:
- A communal area with picnic tables covered by a shade structure, a drinking fountain, and a hard surface for free play all located in the park’s north-western corner.
- Height mounds to provide shelter from occasional strong winds and planted with low growing plants that won’t limit overall visibility.
- Concrete paths located throughout the park that connect to the surrounding path network.
- A fitness trail for all ages situated next to the main path and benches placed throughout the park.
- A small timber play space fenced off with rope surrounded by learn-to-ride paths and a pump section with small bumps. The play space is designed to complement the much larger playground still to be built at nearby Scott Point Sustainable Sports Park.
A large open space to kick a ball around or host community events.
The playground budget is $740,000 with construction now expected to start in October. However, the timeline is dependent on the resource consent, tender process and availability of building materials.
The playground design can be found in the Upper Harbour Local Board meeting agenda for November 2021.
