Summer might be slowly drawing to a close, but there’s still time to explore Auckland’s sandy bays and sparkling water before the weather cools down.
Pack in two or three epic beaches into one day out with these beach-hopping day walks.
1. Maraetai Beach Path
Grab a coffee in Maraetai and set off on the beach path in the direction of Magazine Bay. The trail is a combination of boardwalks, paved path and white shell beaches, meandering past Waiomanu Beach on the way.
2. Rotoroa Island North Path
Catch the ferry out to Rotoroa Island to discover some of the Hauraki Gulf’s best beaches. The North Path is a one-kilometre loop running past Ladies Bay in the east and tranquil Mai Mai Bay in the west. Link up with the South Path for a slightly longer option that takes you to Men’s Beach.
3. Scandretts Bay to Martins Bay
Head to Scandrett Regional Park to enjoy a stroll along the edge of pretty Scandretts Bay, then follow the track over to Martins Bay. Winding through regenerating coastal forest, this path has some great views of the white sand and clear water of Martins Bay - by the time you reach the beach, you’ll be itching to dive right in.
4. Murrays Bay to Rothesay bay
Enjoy a scenic walk along the cliff between Murrays Bay and Rothesay Bay on the North Shore. As well as stunning harbour views, this 40-minute walk links up two great swimming beaches, with equally wonderful picnic spots.
5. Waitawa Kōtare Path
The Kōtare Path hits the highlights of Waitawa Regional Park, starting from Mātaitai Bay and travelling through regenerating coastal bush and wetland environments to Waitawa Bay.
Enjoy swimming in the calm bay with views down to Orere Point and out to myriad islands in the gulf.
6. Tawhitokino Beach Path
A coastal walk, possible at low tide only, takes you from Waiti Bay to Tawhitokino, one of Auckland’s best-hidden beaches. The track covers rocks and bush, with stream crossings as well, so it’s perfect if you want a little more adventure.
The views of the Hauraki Gulf are gorgeous, and the secluded, white sand Tawhitokino beach makes it worth the effort. The walk takes about one hour in each direction, so make sure you allow enough time around low tide to get there and back.
