Concept plans for a new skate park at Sunnynook have been given the green light by Devonport-Takapuna Local Board.
The decision comes after the board received community feedback on options for improved wheeled sports facilities in the area.
The skate park will be built at Sunnynook Square on Sunnynook Road, near the existing basketball court.
This will replace the old and isolated skate bowl in Sunnynook Park.
Auckland Council staff have now been asked to finalise design and construction planning with work expected to start in 2023.
Local board chair Ruth Jackson says: “The new skate park will cater to the area’s growing population, and has been a real focus for the local board.
“The local community has been very clear that new skate facilities are a key priority for Sunnynook – and strongly support the Sunnynook Square location.
“We are excited to see this project get underway and for the community’s vision to become a reality.”
Consultation late last year also asked whether local people were in favour of a new BMX/pump track being built at Sunnynook Park.
As well as approving the skate park concept plans, the local board also agreed that the bike track should be considered for future local funding.
