Update: Nominations for Tāmaki Makaurau’s local election candidates have now closed.
Electoral officials are under the pump as they process an immense number of last minute nominations this morning right up until the deadline at midday.
“Just as we expected, there was an influx this morning and there were some people that were unfortunately a couple of minutes too late” says Rose Leonard, Auckland Council’s Manager Governance Services. “But the rules are clear and have been really well communicated right from the start. The election has to be fair and have the same rules for everyone.
"The team are working hard to finalise the list.” The official list of candidates will be confirmed late this evening.
We are delighted to report that as at 9.30pm Thursday 11 August, a total of 387 nominations had been received. Of those, 21 nominations were for mayoral candidates, 52 for ward councillors, and 314 for local boards. This is an increase from the 2019 election.
Keep an eye out for the final list later this evening to be published here.
