Not all funding grants are large amounts that go towards big scale projects, sometimes a small grant is the financial foot-up that a project needs.

Bayside Westhaven Baseball Club is a volunteer run community Baseball group, which has been part of the Glendowie community for over 30 years.

In 2021 the club applied for and was awarded an Ōrākei Local Board grant of $6,300.  The funding went towards much needed equipment renewals which included protective screens, mounds, diamonds, movable fencing, and club uniforms.

Jody McFarland, President of Bayside Westhaven Baseball Club committee, explains that “usually, the club manages to finance these costs through fundraising, but COVID had a big impact on our ability to do that this year."

"While the local board grant did not cover all of these costs, it was the helping hand we needed.”

Bayside club is a recognised leader within the Auckland baseball community for operating a hands-on, fair play brand of baseball which encourages growth through sport, leadership and sportsmanship.  Which aligns with the Ōrākei Local Boards funding priority:  Activities that are led by the community, encourage and support people from all walks of life at actively participate in their community.
