1. Marlborough Skatepark, Glenfield
North Shore skaters have been coming to the Marlborough Skatepark since the 1970s when the first skatepark was installed. Over the decades this park has had numerous face-lifts and overhauls with the latest in 2020, making it one of Auckland’s favourite skate havens. With a huge bowl that flows organically into a transition area, there is also a three-metre wedge if you’re feeling suitably bold.
2. Waterview Skatepark, Waterview
An oasis on the edge of the Northwestern Motorway, the Waterview Skatepark in Waterview Reserve is the perfect place to take younger skaters, as it has been designed with beginners in mind, as well as providing plenty of space for caregivers. More experienced board riders will also find plenty to keep them occupied, and you will find an ace playground and pump track here too.
3. Crossfield Skatepark, Glendowie
Often overlooked by all but locals and those in the know, this great little skate park has a bowl, a few drop-ins and enough grind rails to keep the kids from skating on top of each other.
Good for newbies and old hands, there is also a basketball area, if you fancy shooting some hoops in between tricks.
4. Victoria Park Skate Plaza, Central Auckland
A genuine destination park, this atmospheric skate plaza is an urban oasis designed by skaters for skaters. There are quarter pipes, a half pipe, and a very popular bowl.
And if you are not ready to take on the ledges, gaps and stairs, this place is excellent for spectators to admire the mad tricks of the truly skilled.
5. Birkenhead Skateboard Park, Birkenhead
Another North Shore skater stalwart, this little beauty was also given a major revamp in recent years and has scrubbed up very well. Thanks to a mellow vibe, this is a popular spot for juniors and intermediates as none of the furniture is too daunting, and on the good days, the smaller bowl draws the crowds so it is great for spectators too.
6. Nixon Skatepark, Kingsland
Small but perfectly formed, this city park has a real cult following and is a great place to practice your moves and meet like-minded enthusiasts who will pass on their hard-won knowledge. Known for its quarter pipe, ramps, ledges, and stairs there’s also a hoop if you’re keen for some basketball to pass the time.
7. Barry Curtis Skatepark, Flat Bush
Barry Curtis Skatepark is one of the newest kids on the block, and it is a skater’s dream come true, with several bowls and a beautifully imagined and engineered street scene.
This park has all the features you would expect of a modern skate plaza, including ledges, stairs, gaps, ramps and some hyped-up handrails.
8. Te Pai Park Skatepark, Lincoln Road, Henderson
An oldie but a goodie, West Auckland skaters from years gone by speak fondly of this little beauty and, when you visit, you will see why.
With one of the best snake run combos this side of Venice (Beach that is) and a bowl your grandma might have skated, there’s also loads of space for everyone to get a decent blast.
9. Browns Bay Skatepark
Right beside the beach, Browns Bay Skatepark has a real holiday vibe. Head on down for the half pipe, ramps, and ledges.
This is a great place to hang out, hone your skills and, when you are taking a breather, the views out to sea are ka pai for your eyes.
