Manurewa Welcomes New Community Recycling Centre

Auckland’s newest Community Recycling Centre (CRC) in Manurewa is now open and is focussing on reusing and repurposing unwanted household items to keep them out of landfill.

Operated by the Beautification Trust and supported by the council, the CRC welcomes local residents to drop off unwanted items in good condition and have a look around at the same time to see if they can find a treasure or two to take home.

General Manager Waste Solutions Parul Sood says, “Now Manurewa residents can help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill – and pick up a bargain at the same time. And with Christmas not far away it is the perfect opportunity to have a clean out at home and find some great gifts at the CRC as well.

“The Beautification Trust does an amazing job, so not only will the CRC prevent waste going to landfill and help achieve the council’s Zero Waste by 2040 goal, it will also educate people about helping to look after the environment as well creating jobs for the local community. There are multi benefits all round,” Parul adds.

The Beautification Trust is a well-established local community enterprise that has been coordinating environmental education, community events and beautification projects all over south and east Auckland since 2001.

Beautification Trust CEO Daniel Barthow says, “We’re delighted to expand our existing partnerships with Auckland Council into the Zero Waste space. Our new CRC will provide practical solutions for our community to reduce waste going to landfill, as well as opportunities to learn about the Zero Waste kaupapa.

“We look forward to the Manurewa CRC being a destination for community connection, learning and engaging in practical actions towards Zero Waste.”

The Manurewa CRC accepts a wide range of items including books, magazines, furniture, bikes, household appliances, computer, and monitors.

It is a little different to others around the region and does not accept refuse, green waste, hazardous waste, dangerous goods, commercial or industrial waste.

Manurewa CRC is one of 11 CRCs in Auckland and Aucklanders are already keeping more than 6000 tonnes out of landfill each year by dropping off items at these recycling centres.

The council is aiming to have a total of 21 CRCs open around the region in the next 10 years so that most Aucklanders will live within a 20-minute drive of one. The next CRC due to open is in Western Springs next year.
