A $225,000 refurbishment of Kumeū Library is about to get underway, with new lighting, painting, ceiling and carpet work set to close the library for seven weeks from 15 May to 2 July.
Rodney Local Board Chair Brent Bailey says the refurbishment is much needed and will be well worth the wait, with processes in place to reduce the impact the closure will have.
“The library is a hub for the Kumeū community, but the interior is looking tired and it’s in line for refurbishment and maintenance.
“Unfortunately to carry out the planned work, the library must close temporarily for almost two months and that will be inconvenient to all.
“All credit to library staff who are doing what they can to reduce the impact on the community as much as possible.”
Library staff have plans in place to keep a limited library service running while renovations are underway. Unfortunately, council services won’t be available, but can be accessed at Te Manawa (Westgate) and Helensville libraries.
Kumeū Library Manager Denise Fuller says staff are grateful for the community’s support while the library is closed temporarily.
“We have been planning this for several months and doing everything we can to reduce its impact. Staff are helping people access some of the services that will be available.”
Key library services that will operate while the library is closed, include the request pick up service located in the Kumeū Meeting Room (to the left of the library entrance) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10am-2pm. Also available is free WiFi that can be accessed from outside the library. The JP service will continue every Saturday 10am-12pm, also from the Kumeū Meeting Room.
“Ultimately refurbing the library’s interior will improve the space and enhance what we can provide to our community,” says Fuller.
Key areas of work include painting the library’s interior, upgrading all lights to LED, replacing the ceiling in the main room and the carpet in the reception area, window blinds and reconfiguring the staff back-office area.
Library updates and information can be found on the Auckland Libraries website (Kumeū Library Location Page), Kumeū Library Facebook page or by contacting the Te Māpuna Library Connect team on 09 377 0209.
Bailey thanks the community for their patience and is looking forward to the library reopening.
“It is going to look great and anyone who walks into the library is going to feel welcome and relaxed. I’m confident that refurb work will enhance our amazing library.”
