On 6 May, Aotearoa will mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III with a variety of coronation celebrations, including a national event in Tāmaki Makaurau.
“King Charles III’s coronation is a time of celebration for many Aucklanders and this historic occasion will be marked in a number of special ways, from a commemorative planting to synchronised lighting of our city’s iconic buildings,” says Mayor Wayne Brown.
As Prince of Wales, His Majesty The King has visited New Zealand ten times between 1970 and 2019.
His Majesty is known for his interests in the built environment, global sustainability, youth opportunity, education and faith.
“His Majesty King Charles III has used his royal position to champion action for a sustainable future. So, it is fitting to mark the occasion with a commemorative tōtara tree, which symbolises nobility, leadership and strength,” says Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson.
