Four new public road names for a Three Kings subdivision have been approved by Puketāpapa Local Board.
Developer Fletcher Residential proposed Koheraunui Rise, Te Onekiri Road, Te Tātau o Pere Road and Riukiuta Avenue.
Albert-Eden-Puketāpapa Ward Councillor Julie Fairey was involved as board chair in the previous term and is pleased the names have been approved.
“It was wonderful to be part of the local board supporting mana whenua’s request of the developer to choose names reflecting the lost history of Te Tatua-a-Riukiuta Three Kings and reinstate those cultural connections.”
The subdivision was consented in 2020 and will see 300-400 homes with associated roading built.
Puketāpapa Local Board Chair Ella Kumar appreciates the efforts achieved through engagement with mana whenua. “The new names acknowledge cultural and ancestral links to our area and pave the way for new residents to learn about those historic ties.”
Koheraunui Rise, directly translates as ‘the large-leafed kohe tree’ and is otherwise known as Big King of the three kings – which was the Eastern cone, now quarried away.
Te Onekiri connects to the hill Te Onekiri, previously located on the eastern side of Three Kings Road, home to a sacred stone until it was pushed down the hill by vandals in the late 1800s.
Te Tātau o Pere refers to the period when the Three Kings complex was just one large crater and its rim, and Riukiuta Avenue is named after a renowned waka navigator. More on the history of Three Kings and the names can be found here [PDF].
The new roads are four of ten public roads to be vested as part of the upcoming residential neighbourhood.
