The iconic Nathan Homestead has been granted more than $6 million in earthquake protection funding.
Manurewa-Papakura Ward Councillor Daniel Newman says Auckland Council has agreed to a forward budget that includes a $6.3 million programme of work to undertake seismic strengthening for the landmark building.
Physical work is scheduled to take place in financial years 2023/24 and 2024/25, with an estimated completion date for the project in June 2025.
Speaking in support of the capital works budget, Councillor Newman says seismic strengthening is important to ensure compliance with building code standards.
“This is the reason why we need to make tough choices every year to pass balanced budgets. Nathan Homestead is iconic and work programmes such as seismic strengthening, while not cheap, are necessary to maintaining ageing public buildings."
“$6.3 million for Nathan Homestead is just one of a series of capital funding lines that have been agreed across a range of Council activities. I’m very happy to back this magnificent old heritage building."
“I also want to acknowledge the Manurewa Local Board for its support for this seismic strengthening work."
“Chair Glenn Murphy, deputy Matt Winiata and other board members have done a good job in advocating for a balanced budget that enables projects such as this one at Nathan Homestead to proceed,” Newman says.
Winiata says Nathan Homestead is a jewel in the Crown for Hillpark and the wider community.
“As a board we have been very motivated to work and rework the budgets. We need to maintain our focus on completing important local projects, maintaining facilities like Nathan Homestead, and taking action for the development of our local parks and reserves.”
