Avondale and Blockhouse Bay Libraries opening hours are set to change.
From 19 February, both libraries will close half an hour earlier each weekday due to changes to Whau Local Board’s budget.
The earlier hours will not apply on Tuesdays for Avondale Library and Thursdays for Blockhouse Bay Library.
Local Board chair Kay Thomas says, “Over the past few years, additional funding from Whau Local Board has helped Avondale Library and Blockhouse Bay Library stay open for longer, providing an extra three operating hours every week.
“We understand the importance of libraries for our community. Our board still manages to fund one more additional hour at each library even though we are having more financial constraints this year.”
The decision was reached by reviewing the average number of visits during the board-funded hours.
“Following the analysis of the library usage, we were able to reduce hours when the libraries are used least, meaning that there should be a minimal impact on community use,” says Kay.
“While this is not something that we wanted to do, unfortunately the budget pressures we are facing left us without many other options, and this solution means we can continue to fund extra library hours that we know get good use with the funding we have.
"We are also pleased that we were able to not have to change the New Lynn War Memorial Library opening hours, which will stay the same.”

Tuesday: 9am – 6pm
Wednesday: 9am – 5.30pm

Friday: 9am – 5.30pm
Saturday: 10am – 4pm
Sunday: 12pm – 4pm
Blockhouse Bay Library
Monday: 9am – 5.30pm
Tuesday: 9am – 5.30pm
Wednesday: 9am – 5.30pm
Thursday: 9am – 6pm
Friday: 9am – 5.30pm
Saturday: 10am – 4pm
Sunday: 12pm – 4pm
