Vibrant events for Tāmaki Makaurau supported by Auckland Council

Events in Tāmaki Makaurau offer Aucklanders the opportunity to enjoy colour, culture, fun and the chance to learn and connect. On 14 March Auckland Council’s Planning, Environment and Parks Committee approved an allocation of $113,000 from the Regional Events Fund grants programme to seven organisations to help with their events.

The events funded through the grants programme deliver a range of outcomes and benefits to communities by contributing to a sense of place and connection.

Councillor Richard Hills, chair of the Planning, Environment and Parks Committee says events are hugely important to the cultural fabric of Auckland.

“It’s important that Aucklanders have the chance to regularly attend an array of events in Tāmaki Makaurau, to feel a sense of pride and belonging and to celebrate the city’s diversity.

“Many of these events will also bring an economic boost with participants spending at nearby local businesses.

“Without the hard work of organisations and community groups, these events wouldn’t be possible. We thank all those who give their time to make these events happen.”

An exciting range of arts and sports events received funding, including Korean Day 2024, YMCA’s Walk the Line 2024, Auckland Regional Sprint Regatta for outrigger canoes, Auckland Rugby League’s college finals, Te Pou Theatre’s Whānau Day - Kōanga Festival 2024 and Matariki Ki Waipareira.

Auckland Council considered a wide range of factors in allocating funding including positive benefits to the community with particular emphasis on youth and Māori, the level of community support and involvement, and alignment with key dates such as Matariki.

Auckland Council’s Head of Events Glynn Leggat says a range of events are being supported through the fund.

“Diverse and different events are being supported by the fund, from cultural events, to music, to sports, to occasions such as Anniversary weekend and Matariki, which add energy to the city and give residents new opportunities to connect.

“We encourage Aucklanders to look out for these events over the coming months and get out and support and enjoy them.”

The $113,000 allocated is in addition to the $404,000 allocated in October 2023 for the first round of funding for 2023/2024 from the Regional Event Fund grants programme.
