Road safety improvements are in the pipeline for Avondale and Green Bay, thanks to the recent allocation of the Whau Local Board Transport Capital Fund.
The fund, managed by Auckland Transport (AT) on behalf of Whau Local Board, will see new raised pedestrian crossings on Hepburn Road, South Lynn Road and St Georges Road, pedestrian improvements near Orchard St/ Rosebank Rd intersection, and line-marking and signage improvements on Godley Road.
Whau Local Board chair Kay Thomas says it’s great to give the go-ahead for local road safety improvements, especially those near Jireh Christian School, Rosebank School and Green Bay School.
“It will ensure our local children and parents can move around our busy intersections safely. This is so important - especially around peak travel hours near the schools,” she says.
“Hopefully it will help address the risky driver behaviours on Godley Road, once the improvements are finished.”
Apart from the improvements near the three schools, AT will complete the new raised pedestrian crossings on Hepburn Road and South Lynn Road.
Kay says the pedestrian improvements are much needed as the number of deaths and serious injuries on Auckland’s roads continues to increase.
“Raised crossings reduce the likelihood of deaths or serious injuries. Our board would love to do our best to help improve road safety and make Whau a better place for all of us to live and work,” she adds.
“We understand there’re many projects that need tender love and care in our local area, but due to budget restrictions our options are rather limited, and we’ve done everything we can to prioritise the most needed ones.”
AT is now working on the designs for the funded improvements and will seek feedback from locals soon.
