What was once a bumpy ride has been smoothed by a seal extension on Motairehe Road.
In the latest project, around 1.2km of previously unsealed road on Aotea, regularly used by more than 25 families, has now been sealed.
It is also the gateway to Motairehe Marae, improving an important connection for Ngāti Rehua Ngātiwai ki Aotea with the rest of the motu.
Aotea / Great Barrier Local Board put $462,000 towards the work, topped up by another $155,000 from Auckland Transport.
“The board has always pushed for seal extensions, especially around where people are living,” says local board transport portfolio lead Patrick O’Shea.
“Seal extensions up north [like this one] have been advocated for term-on-term. Every time we can tick another one of these off, we do. We’re slowly making our way through the network.”
After delays due to slips from the 2023 storm events, the work is now complete, providing the community with safer, easier access.
A large portion of the work was carried out by local business Aotea Contractors.
The upgraded road will require much less maintenance than it has in the past due to improved drainage and its new sealed status.
Other transport projects that are underway thanks to the local board include the almost completed Hector Sanderson walkway in Claris, and Pah Beach berm improvements.
