Onehunga will get new public spaces and improved streetscapes as the Waiapu Precinct project goes into the detailed design phase, ahead of work starting at the end of the year.

Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board has now approved a concept design after March’s public consultation drew hundreds of pieces of feedback supporting the proposed plans.

Board deputy chair Debbie Burrows is pleased the community is solidly behind the project and that it is well on track:

“Thank you to the community for participating and providing your feedback on the proposed design of the Waiapu Precinct and Paynes Lane public spaces,” says deputy chair Burrows.

“A lot of the feedback around the design was well-considered and the local board is happy to approve the finalised plan that will revitalise Waiapu Precinct and Paynes Lane.”

“Like you, we are very much looking forward to seeing the upgrades take shape,” says deputy chair Burrows.

Now with the go-ahead, Eke Panuku will advance the project to the next stages of design, with exploratory earthworks beginning in May 2024, followed by underground services and drainage set to start in late 2024. Streetscape improvements are scheduled to commence in 2025, followed by construction of the play space.

The approved concept design includes:

  • A new public plaza

  • green spaces

  • a family play space

  • safer walking connections between Waiapu Precinct and Onehunga Mall, and through to Dress Smart retail precinct’s planned expansion

  • a sense of cultural identity captured through design details in collaboration with artist Graham Tipene, appointed by mana whenua.

Public feedback shared enthusiasm for an upgraded playground to cater to a range of ages and more planting to brighten public spaces. Key community priorities raised included improved walking and cycling infrastructure, safety and lighting and parking provisions was also identified.

Other community concerns included the need to address social problems and antisocial behaviour occurring within the precinct, rubbish and lack of maintenance.

Eke Panuku Onehunga Priority Location Director, Kate Cumberpatch is excited to get the green light and proceed with this project, as part of the wider urban regeneration plan.

"This project marks the beginning of a series of initiatives aimed to revitalise Onehunga’s central precinct,” says Cumberpatch.

“Improving safer walking connections, creating new public spaces and providing more greenery will add to the future expansion of Dress Smart retail precinct with an incoming supermarket, and reinvigorate the town centre.”

“Eke Panuku will also work alongside private investors to encourage the building of new homes to continue growing and supporting the thriving town centre, and so even more people and families can enjoy living in Onehunga.”

The plans for Waiapu Precinct and Paynes Lane form part of broader initiatives by Eke Panuku for Onehunga, aimed at attracting more investment and supporting the growing population and local businesses.

Sustainable urban development is the key to a thriving and resilient town centre for Onehunga both now and in the future.
