More than $200,000 will be spent on environmental projects across Manurewa in the financial year.

The Environmental Local Work Programme pays for green, water quality, sustainability and waste minimisation efforts.

“Caring for the local environment was a particular concern for many of those who made submissions around our plans, and Auckland Council’s ongoing budgets,” Manurewa Local Board chair Matt Winiata says.

“We all witnessed the devastating floods across the city, and we have to play a part in doing our bit to minimise climate change and provide generations to come with a better environment than we have inherited.”

The Local Environmental Work Programme includes:

  • Low Carbon Lifestyles Home Energy Advice - $31,500

  • Manukau Harbour Forum - $11,000

  • Manurewa Waitiaki Project - $45,000

  • Manurewa Waste Minimisation - $50,000

  • Papakura Stream Restoration Programme - $14,000

  • Pest Free South Auckland - $66,000.

The six projects share a combined $217,500 although the Manukau Harbour Forum also receives funding from the eight other boards that touch the harbour, and the Papakura Stream flows through Franklin and Papakura, with those boards also providing funding.

Winiata says the low carbon work gives personalised recommendations and information to households to encourage energy efficiency and reduce costs.

“Some of our funding will pay for in-home assessments that are based on Healthy Home Standards. We are joining a programme that has already been successful in the Whau, Puketāpapa, Waitematā, Mangere-Otāhuhu and Maungakiekie-Tāmaki board areas.

“The Manurewa Waitiaki project might be less well-known. It is the old Awa restoration programme and it allows us to do further restoration, water quality monitoring and litter-clean ups along our waterways.

“We have funded the waste minimisation programme since 2017. It helps residents to reduce, sort and dispose of their household waste, prevent illegal dumping, and build community pride.”
