Let there be light - solar light

More than $27million in funding has been put in place by Manurewa Local Board approving its Customer and Community Services work programme for the financial year.

The budget covers projects across the area that support the delivery of the outcomes outlined in the Manurewa Local Board Plan 2023.

Board chair Matt Winiata says the work programme is a complex document that covers many of the council departments that work with the board to deliver services and community assets in the area.

“We have sent feedback around a number of issues, notably at Beihlers Road foreshore, where we want to see solar lighting put in place as the final Weymouth Wharf stage.

“The board has also indicated it strongly supports the Manurewa Community Centre development, having just approved an indicative business case, and the seismic strengthening work underway at Nathan Homestead.”

He says the board has also made a request that $4.2 million in growth funding allocated to deliver projects in the Clendon Reserve concept plan - originally forecast for delivery in 2024/2025 but now pushed out to 2028/2029 - be re-introduced.

“This is a project that delivers for a community with the greatest need but the budget keeps being deferred,” Winiata says.

“There’s no doubt budgets are under scrutiny at a challenging time but we have urged that funding to progress Manurewa War Memoria Park upgrades not be delayed until 2029/2030 as is now planned. We would like to see multi-use facilities and upgraded fields phased into the budget much earlier than that.”

The board is also concerned that since the budget planning was undertaken, seismic issues at the Manurewa Netball Centre have been identified.

“Obviously that might have an impact and we would want to be able to respond accordingly. Our Parks and Community Facilities staff have already committed to providing us more information in the coming months.”
