A new signalised pedestrian crossing outside the Gurdwara Nanaksar Sikh Temple on Great South Road in Manurewa balances the needs of those who walk with those who drive.

Manurewa Local Board chair Matt Winiata says the board had wanted to fund and install the crossing for a number of years, but it became caught up in a number of delays caused by budget constraints.

“In the end, what has been achieved is a workable compromise.

“The crossing is signalised, so pedestrians can stop the traffic and walk across Great South Road on the appropriate signal.

“But we asked Auckland Transport to maintain the section of Great South Road at-grade, which meant we avoided another raised table.

“Every time the motorway is closed for work, the Great South Road becomes the secondary arterial corridor, and takes all that traffic.

“Keeping this section of the road at-grade strikes the right balance, and we are grateful for Auckland Transport’s agreement regarding the revised design.”

He says the board is also grateful to Marshal Walia for his advocacy.

“As a local resident, Marshal appeared before us at least four times to advocate for the crossing. He represents the best of our community insofar as he speaks up for it, and our decision-making is the better for it.”
